Hopefully everyone is enjoying the spring weather, personally I had a system shock when I left Illinois early last month for Bike Week in Florida and was presented with upper 80 degree temperatures, slightly different from the upper 30's I had left. The motorcycle racing season has fully started for me and already this year I have captured images at five different professional race events, with a couple of more scheduled for this month. One other big event this month occurs a week from today, a Total Solar Eclipse in North America. I will have to wait another 20 years to see one here in the United States, so the challenge will be finding a location that is not cloudy as most long range forecasts are predicting most of the Midwest to be cloudy; hopefully this is one of the times our weather forecasts are incorrect.
The first image this month is the last Total Solar Eclipse in North America, back in August of 2017. This was captured along the Illinois and Kentucky border, along the Ohio River and totality lasted about 2.5 minutes. This year’s eclipse in the same area will be just over 4 minutes, these times are based on the distance of the moon from the Earth, this year the moon is closer to our planet. The black circle in this image is actually the moon and the white streams are the sun's outer atmosphere, called the corona. Camera Data: 280mm 1/13 sec F8 ISO400
Our next image is from this year’s MotoAmerica Daytona 200 road race, this is the start of the 82nd edition of the race. The race originally started on the beach, similar to the NASCAR race but was first run at the Daytona International Speedway in 1961. Ironically the race was won by Roger Reiman from Wisconsin in the wet, the only 200 to be competed in the wet and his father operated a Harley-Davidson dealership in Kewanee IL, which still operates to this day. While most people probably do not know who Roger was, you might know who Evel Knievel was and Roger was his head mechanic after he retired from racing. This year’s event had 68 riders entered, with two females, but also riders from 13 countries - it’s also worth noting that the margin of victory in the past three 200s was a combined .108 of a second. This year had some drama from key teams and the margin of victory was nearly 46 seconds, the race being won by Josh Herrin, his second consecutive win and third overall. Camera Data: 400mm 1/1000 sec F11 ISO1600
