If the adage, April showers bring May flowers, is true then most of the Midwest is going to be swimming in flowers real soon. For the last few weeks we have been measuring rainfall in full inches, not fractions of inches. Unfortunately, we have also been experiencing tornadoes and severe weather. This is never enjoyable but I don't think people on the West Coast enjoy mudslides or high-force earthquakes either, each region has its pluses and minuses for living there.
The past week has been a whirlwind adventure - originally I had an American Flat Track event to photograph in Dallas TX. No problem until the Peoria Rivermen hockey team that I support made the President's Cup final round; this is not normally an issue but game two was scheduled to be in Peoria on Saturday evening, the same night I was committed to be in Dallas. Both teams agreed to play a three-game series, which I don't care for but they never asked for my opinion, with game one beginning in Huntsville AL on Thursday evening and game three, if needed, to be held in Peoria. Without getting into the details, I traveled to AL, then TX, and finally back to Peoria to capture images of the final game.
The first image this month is our big event in North America early last month, a total solar eclipse. I struggled to determine the best location to visit based on weather forecasts and the morning of the eclipse I decided to join a friend at his location. Based on my early morning research, his selection would be near prime conditions at totality, and lucky for us, it was darn near perfect. We do not have seven suns in our solar system, so no need to panic. The center image is the sun with the moon in front of our view at the end of totality and Baily's Beads getting ready to nearly explode in our eyes. One incredible sight was the solar prominence seen at the bottom right of the sun, this was visible with the naked eye during totality (the only time it's safe to view the sun without special filters). The eclipse starts in the upper left, goes down and into the middle and then moves to the upper right and down to complete the eclipse. There is between 13-20 minutes time expiration between each image and you may notice sunspots on the left side images. For the sharp-eyed viewers looking hard at this month's image, the outer sun images are not at the same scale as the center image since I wanted to highlight the solar prominences in the center image. Soon there will be a few versions similar to this month's desktop calendar, if you are interested in a specific size, let me know. For the center image only - Camera Data: 600mm 1/800 sec F8 ISO400
Our next image is the Peoria Rivermen players and staff after the Cup presentation to the team after they defeated the Huntsville Havoc 5-1, to win the series two games to one. A couple of interesting stats about the win, first, it was the first Championship series win on home ice for the 42-year-old franchise, on the 25th anniversary of its ECHL Kelly Cup victory. This win was the second SPHL title in the past three years for the team, in a record fifth appearance in the finals in their short 10-year existence in the league. Ironically, back in 2018, the last time Peoria could have won the title on their home ice was against the same Huntsville Havoc organization - Peoria was not victorious that season but was this year. Camera Data: 24mm 1/500 sec F9 ISO8000
