This month I am going to avoid talking about how the weather is, politics and airlines - too many people are doing that already. Let's just say I hope everyone and their loved ones are doing well as summer as begun in the Northern Hemisphere. For me, this is the time I am extremely busy and can honestly say I do not know when my next weekend without an event will be, without looking at my calendar. There are pluses and minuses being a freelance photographer. The images this month will have history lessons for everyone.

Let's start with our first image in Northern California, near the city of Mineral, in Lassen Volcanic National Park. This was captured two weeks ago, yes there is still a large amount of snow there, so much the main road over the mountain range is still being plowed. You might be thinking, how does this image have anything to do with history, see that burnt trunk bottom left of center plus the saplings further behind - those are all related to the Dixie Fire in 2021. That fire was the largest in California history, hopefully not to be repeated; unfortunately it was determined to be started by human and not Mother Nature. The total fire area was nearly 1 million acres, with just 73240 acres within the National Park boundary. Most of Lassen Volcanic NP is forested with various species of conifer trees and you can see in this image how they are able to survive fire and drop their seeds to produce new generations of trees. While I was not able to hike down to this location, since I did not have snow shoes on this day, the snow around the burnt trunk is probably about 3 feet high. In case you are wondering, the deepest snowpack near Lassen Peak was recorded in 1983 at 331"!  Camera Data: 200mm 1/6400 sec F4 ISO400

The second image is a very different piece of history, one Harley Davidson Motorcycle Company starting in 1970. While the first generation of the XR750 race bike only lasted two years, the second generation shown in this image, was a dominate force in AMA Pro Racing until 2008, when the brand won 28 of 37 AMA Grand National Championships. This bike has won more races than any other motorcycle in flat track racing plus it was the model of choice for Evil Knievel. Honestly not sure how many of these bikes are still being raced, parts are no longer made but a few die hards still race them occasionally but most are sitting idle in museums, in this image racer Sammy Halbert rides one of the Dodge Brothers Racing bikes, in the right hands this is still a motorcycle with potential over water cooled engines. On this day in Chico California, Halbert was able to finish in third place but was able to lead a hand full of laps in the main event.
