August is upon us and seems like the couple of weeks have shown summer is finally here in the United States - hopefully you are staying out of the heat. July was a good month with a fair amount of travel and my first sale of images to a couple of clients in Germany. I will admit it was interesting during the negotiations to have to convert back and forth Euros and US Dollars but the real interesting part was their little English and my complete lack of German language. Everything worked out in the end. July also marked the a quarter million views of my Flickr account in the past 8 years.
The first image this month is from York Maine, actually shot this image on July 18th during Sunset - on that date I spent all day along the coast of Maine and was able to shoot images of this lighthouse at sunrise and sunset. In 1874 President Rutherford B. Hayes appropriated the sum of $15,000 to build a lighthouse on this “Nub” of land. On July 1, 1879 construction was completed on what, at the time, was known as the Knubble Lighthouse and in 1939 the US Government transferred operation to the US Coast Guard who officially named her Cape Neddick Lightstation, but it's popular name today is Nubble Light. A lease agreement was signed in 1987 between the United States government and the Town of York to ensure that the property would be maintained and cared for and after numerous political actions, on December 18, 1997 - The Town of York Maine was named the permanent guardian for Nubble Lighthouse. The lighthouse is listed on the National Register of Historic Places to pres erve and protect its historical presence in history.
The second image this month is from Jenness Pond in Northwood New Hampshire, it's a 267 acre pond that flows into Jenness Brook which is a feeder of Northwood Lake. This year the resident Loons had a couple of chicks and I was able to get fairly close from a boat to capture this image. Over a few days while I was in the area, it was fun to watch the parents show the chicks how to dive for food and feed them. Currently the state of Illinois does not have any breeding sites with Loons, so I enjoy any chance to capture images of them.
Here's a link to download the appropriate version of this month's image for your desktop, one for standard screens and one for wide-screens. Right click on the text for the format you need and select Save As, save to a location on your computer that you can remember and change the background as needed for your OS.
