Tim Lester Images Monthly Update
April was an interesting month here in Central Illinois, we had moments of Winter, Spring and Summer! I think we can safely say Spring is here but the last snow fall we experienced a few weeks ago did arrive after the first spring flowers were blooming.
The first image is a monument located at Mead Rapids View Park in Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin on a sunny spring day. The clock and bell in the tower were originally installed in 1892, serving the neighboring village of Grand Rapids until 1957 when the building was demolished. A private group obtained the components and raised restoration funds for the bell and clock along with construction of a tower for display. Funded only by private contributions, the new tower was dedicated June 1991. For those photographers out there, this image is a 30 second exposure - that's the reason for the cloud and tree movements.
Our second image this month is the opposite of our first image, high speed motorcycle racing from the Springfield Mile - a crown jewel on the American Flat Track racing calendar. It's such a special race track, it's the only circuit used twice in the same season. The track first held an auto race in 1910, making it one of the oldest speedways in the United States. The Springfield Mile ran its first national motorcycle race in 1937; from 1946 to 1953 the championship was determined by winning this one race! That would be like winning the Indy 500 and winning the Indy Car Championship or winning the Daytona 500 to be awarded the NASCAR Championship. Team Indian rider Jared Mees and his wife Nicole, a former flat track racer, were married at the track before a race - it has that type of emotional impact with racers. Last season the races were 25 laps and both races were over in less than 15 minutes and 30 seconds! The best race lap was 34.5 seconds around the one mile dirt track - think about that speed on dirt.
