Tim Lester Images Monthly Update
We have reached mid-point of the year, while summer officially starting a few weeks ago. For my friends in the USA, we are approaching our countries birthday of July 4th, which marks a national holiday when friends and family get together to grill out, play games and witness firework displays. For those who like numbers, July 1 is the 182nd day of the year (183rd in leap years) in the Gregorian calendar - there are 183 days remaining until the end of the year.
The first image is from last year - Peoria IL's Red, White and BOOM fireworks. The event normally see's over 150,000 people in attendance, lining both sides of the Illinois River, while the fireworks are actually shot from a barge in the middle of the river. Organizers claim the show ranks in the top 3 percent of fireworks displays in the country, and is easily the largest in Illinois. The show is 30 minutes in length and approximately 8,000 shells are launched, it's actually a really good show.
Our second image this month is from the return of a classic event after 17 year absence - the Quincy Grand Prix. Let's take a step back first, in 1970 a group of business owners in Quincy IL started a go-kart race at South Park, this began a 32 year legendary event for many racers young and old. After declining entries, the race was put on hiatus hoping to become an event again in the future. The Grand Prix helped give rise to numerous professional racing careers, race alumni include Scott Pruett, Scott Goodyear, Alan Kulwicki, Alex Barron, Mark Dismore, Lake Speed and Jamie McMurray. This year the organizers were hoping for 200 entries, well short of the previous record of 625, they were pleased with a final count of 302. Impressive number for an event that was announced only 6 months prior to the race date, the racers came from 15 different states - even one racer from Bermuda. This image of Todd Bolton celebrating a win, getting some air after crossing the finish line, aft er besting 16 other racers.
