Can anyone tell me where July went? Looking back at the month, I was very busy and could have drove from Boston to San Francisco and then to Los Angeles with the miles I drove. Luckily I don't mind a little windshield time and a big portion of those miles was with my wife sitting next to me. The next few months appear to be very busy with a few driving trips planned, you'll have to wait and see where I travel to next. If you have any types of images you would like to see, make sure you send me a message and I will see what I can do. Last month a good friend spent some time driving me around North Conway New Hampshire, pointing out locations he wanted to see on future desktop calendars, so for him we have a couple of images from this home state of New Hampshire.
Both images this month are from Mount Washington in New Hampshire, for those who don't know, Mount Washington is the highest point in the northeastern United States. Few other facts you may not know - it's known as the most dangerous small mountain in the world, the winds can be so strong you can not hike the trails without being pushed off course. The second highest wind velocity ever recorded at any surface weather station was logged there on April 12, 1934 - 231mph! The weather station has recorded snow in every month of the year. We were extremely lucky on our visit, calm winds and low 70's - one worker told me he does not remember the last time he did not need a jacket or sweatshirt up top. We actually drove to the top, a little 7.6 mile trip up 4618 feet with an average grade of 12% - steepest 2 lane road I have ever driven. They actually have weight limits for passengers in the vehicle due to the drive down and keeping everyone safe - by the way, there are no guard rai ls.
The first image is looking over the White Mountains toward Vermont and down at AMC Lakes of Clouds Hut, a quaint remote hike-in cabin that serves hot meals to hikers on the Appalachian Trail and providing a place to sleep. While at the summit, we did see a few hikers heading to Maine from Georgia on the AT. For those curious, the AT leaves the cabin to the left in this image and bypasses Mount Monroe near the center of the image. The trail over the summit of Mt. Monroe is a section of the National Scenic Trail which connects back to the AT which follows the ridge line and out of sight beyond the peak of Mount Eisenhower.
Our second image this month is a hiker on the Appalachian Trail waving to the conductor on the Mount Washington Cog Railway. While I would like to say I planned our trip to see a train coming up the mountain, there was only luck involved on this day. The steam train runs up and down only two times a day and I was fortunate to photograph the first visit of the day going up. I was also on the peak long enough to see the more common diesel trains summit, travel back down, summit again and travel back down. At one time there were three diesel trains and the steam at the summit. For those who like steam trains, the train crew performs maintenance at the base and at the summit, which explains why there are only two trips a day using this engine.
