December 2018 Newsletter
Has anyone realized the end of the year is upon us? This year has flown by with a large amount of traveling and shooting images. Hopefully you have enjoyed the images I have shared and like the variety - if you have any comments please send them, positive and negative are both welcome.
The first image is Grinnell Glacier in Glacier National Park, a hike I have been wanting to make for many years and finally able to make the trek on my second visit to the park. Grinnell Glacier is the long skinny glacier, middle left of the image and while it does not look real big it's about 1 mile wide and half mile deep - thats about 140 acres! Salamander Glacier is the one to the right side of the image and it's about 43 acres. The hike itself takes some time, it's about 5.5 miles one way from Many Glacier Hotel but you can eliminate about 2 miles by taking a couple of shuttle boats across Swiftcurrent Lake and Lake Josephine. It's considered a strenuous hike with just under 500 feet of elevation gain per mile hiked. While the elevation gain may be intimidating, it's the wildlife you need to think about. Since I was alone on this trip, I joined up with a ranger led group hike, safety in numbers - this hike was my first glimpse of a grizzly bear and two cubs on this trip. Some may have heard about this trail and hike, back in 2010 Jack Hanna was charged by a grizzly bear protecting her cubs - no one was hurt when Jack was able to repel the sow with bear spray. In years past, rangers would lead hikes out onto the glacier itself. However, as a result of its retreat in recent years, rangers no longer take groups out onto the ice. The park does allow visitors to venture out onto the glacier, but they highly recommend that you don't go alone, or go too far. It's especially dangerous when there's fresh snow on the ground, which can hide deep crevasses.
Our second image this month is one of my favorite subjects, the American Bald Eagle. Long time subscribers of this newsletter probably know that every year between Christmas and New Years that I spend some time looking for Eagles to capture images. This was taken last winter along the Mississippi River one afternoon, if you look close you can see the Eagle captured a little snack in it's right talon. Hoping to capture some images like this later this month but temperatures need to drop to help freeze some water along the rivers to concentrate populations of these migrating birds.
Here's a link to download the appropriate version of this month's image for your desktop, one for standard screens and one for wide-screens. Right click on the text for the format you need and select Save As, save to a location on your computer that you can remember and change the background as needed for your OS.
