Happy New Year to everyone - be safe and enjoy the celebrations along with some time off. When I created last months newsletter, I started thinking about how much I traveled over the past few years. Most people love to arrive at their destination quickly as possible but as most of you know, I am not like most people. In 2018, I took a few trips for personal photography along with numerous business trips to shoot events for various clients - in total I drove 44k miles and visited 16 states. While I have not calculated the total miles over the past 2 years, I can tell you have my car has been in 26 states - that's a large amount of windshield time!
The first image is looking over Lake Michigan at sunrise from 360 Chicago, those who are familiar with Chicago will notice Navy Pier and famous Ferris Wheel. The area was opened to the public in July 1916, so it's a little over 100 years old. Originally known as the "Municipal Pier", it's original purpose was to serve as a dock for freight, passenger traffic, indoor and outdoor recreation; with events like expositions and pageants held there. On the morning this image was captured, the light started ok, then became great and cloudy the rest of the day while I was in town.
Our second image this month is an immature American Bald Eagle, about 2.5 years old, which I just spent the day searching for. The weather in the Midwest has been fairly warm without much water freezing. Freezing water is important for my trips as it will create opportunities to photograph numerous eagles in one area. Today I was able to find about 12 Bald Eagles over 5 hours of driving along the Mississippi River along Illinois and Iowa borders. One additional factor I did not realize until my search began, the Mississippi River had been at flood stage for some time, so water flow was high which prevents ice forming. For the first time in 10 years, I did not shoot a single frame of a bald eagle around the first of the new year.
