Hope everyone is staying warm, the polar vortex that hit the North American continent was quite the artic blast of cold air. In Central Illinois, the temperatures were a roller coaster ride with a high temperature of 61 on January 7 and a low temperature of -20 on January 30 recorded in Peoria. Amazing fact is that neither temperature was a record for the area, but a record was set with a high temperature of -6 on January 30th.
The first image is looking over Mississippi River on a cold morning near Gladstone IL in late 2017, my friend David Vernon made the comment when he first saw the image that it was so cold it took away color. Obviously the grain elevator is not operating with the frozen river and no barge traffic.
Our second image this month is forward Mike Gurtler of the Peoria Rivermen wearing a throw back jersey for the 1980 US Mens Olympic hockey team. After the game I thought about how many players would cherish wearing these special jersy's and then I realized that none of the players were alive during the 1980 Olympics. An interesting fact of the Peoria Rivemen at this time - they are the only professional ice hockey team in the US without a home loss during regulation game time. They have experienced one home loss in OT in early November.
