While Spring is here, Mother Nature has been having fun with us in the Midwest - a large snow storm occured two weeks ago and the northern half received snow last weekend. Luckily it does not last more than a couple of days so most people are enjoying the weather. People complain it's too cold but not sure they want the heat and humidity of summer - I know I can wait. Now it's raining, so majority of the Midwest is under flood warnings from rain and melting snow.
The first image is a barn near Princeville IL taken last week - a late afternoon thunderstorm was passing thru and I noticed clouds breaking up along the horizon. I grabbed some camera equipment, started driving toward the storm and was hoping for dramatic sunset or storm images, I was not able to find any storms since they had moved out of the area. While not thrilled with missing storm images, I came across this barn at the right moment - the sun was peaking out of the clouds long enough to light up sections of the barn. Lucky for me the owner had placed aluminum over the doors and left the regular steel siding, the late afternoon light lit up the end doors and I forgot about missing the storm.
Our second image this month is for everyone who paid the ultimate sacrifice, it's a portion of Camp Butler National Cemetery near Springfield IL. The cemetery is one of fourteen original national cemeteries established by Congress in 1862 at the request of President Lincoln, it's also all that remains of one of the largest Civil War-era training centers for Union troops. The site also became a Conderate POW prison in early 1862 prior to becoming a cemetery, buried are 866 Union and 776 Confederate soldiers who died at the camp between 1862 and 1865. Along with soldiers who fought for both the Union and Confederate sides during the Civil War, veterans who lost their lives in the Spanish-American War, the two World Wars, the Korea War and the Vietnam War are also buried at Camp Butler National Cemetery. If you want to learn more about the cemetery, visit the National Park Service website: https://www.nps.gov/nr/travel/national_cemeteries/Illinois/Camp_Butler_National_Cemetery.html
