Did everyone get the candy they were hoping for this weekend from Halloween trick or treating? Hopefully if you have children, they were willing to share your favorite candy from their stash. This month had numerous trips for myself and part of that was hoping to capture some great color in the Southeast around Tennessee and North Carolina. Unfortunately I was a little early for fall to be in full swing, by about 2-3 weeks, even though some websites indicated areas were near peak prior to my departure - guess you can't believe everything you read on the internet. Luckily I was able to see some wonderful sites, capture some great photos and meet some good people along the way.

Our first image is actually from a location that I happened upon by accident. One location I spent some time on my trip was the Blue Ridge Parkway, more on that at a later date but based on time I had to cut my drive short and took some smaller highways to get to our Interstate system a little quicker. While arriving in a small town I was presented with numerous signs about a water fall. Near the edge of town there was a sign for a cascade park a few miles off the road. I actually drove past the road and discussed within in my head for a few miles if I should stop or keep going - I finally turned around to have a quick stop. Reached the trailhead and it described two different trails and a 2 mile hike, I would swear the map I read said 2 mile round trip but I found that value was one way. Pictures around the area did not show much of a water fall and the area was called Cascades Falls, so I figured it would be a fairly quick hike to the cascade fall and on the road I would be -boy was I wrong again. Cascade Falls is a 66 foot drop, personally I would not call it a cascade but the full two mile hike, on either side of the creek was full of cascades. Ultimately I spent around 5 hours along the trails and this image is one of those many cascades found along the creek. The mobile image this month is also from this image. Second image this month was actually the start of my trip to the Southeast, Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Actually was lucky to capture this image as I almost waited too long to keep driving along the Cades Cove Loop road. For anyone who has driven in a National Park, wildlife tend to create traffic jams and this was one of those times. Cades Cove road is one way, so any wildlife actually creates a bigger problem since traffic has nowhere to go. At one point, I actually stopped after getting frustrated with the slow moving and captured images in a field area. After about an hour, I decided to get back in the car and keep driving at a pace slower than a walk. Passengers were actually getting out of cars to walk forward along the road to determine why things were delayed. Ultimately I turned a corner and found park volunteers directing traffic and keeping the public safe with this mother Black Bear and her three cubs just off the road. So no fancy story about hiking deep in the woods and tracking bears, these bears were less than 20 yards from the road! One thing I realize, black bears on the East coast of the US are much smaller than their Western cousins - I have seen dogs larger than this mother bear. Camera Data: 400mm 1/640 sec F5.6 ISO800
