Welcome to 2022 - part 2! Received a few messages indicating the link to the calendars failed, so here's an updated version with the correct link.
While I would love to say things are going to be very different this year, I am not sure they will be. Sending virtual good wishes to everyone and their families, hopefully you are staying safe and healthy with a prosperous year ahead. This past year was good overall with the various COVID restrictions early in the year, still seeing lost business due to COVID related regulations but hopeful this year returns to a more normal type of year. The one area that 2021 was different, travel - I spent a larger amount of time on the road to support clients. Last year my travel was about 2x higher than 2020, in vehicle mileage that equals about 26000 miles in 2021.
This past week I took some time off and traveled to the Southern part of Illinois with my family for a little tent camping and hiking. My kids are getting to the age where I am not sure how many trips we will be able to take together, so hoping to take every chance possible spending time with them. Mother Nature was nice overall to us, one day of rain but temperatures in the upper 60's during the day and mid 40's at night - I will take that any time of year but especially the last week of December in Illinois!
The first image this month is from February of 2021, early morning sun rise looking toward East Peoria over the frozen Illinois River with a sun pillar. According to the University of Illinois Department of Atmospheric Sciences, a sun pillar is a vertical shaft of light extending upward or downward from the sun. Typically seen during sunrise or sunset, sun pillars form when sunlight reflects off the surfaces of falling ice crystals associated with thin, high-level clouds (like cirrostratus clouds). The Mobile image is taken from this frame also. Camera Data: 70mm 1/400 sec F5.6 ISO200
The next image is also from February last year, with one of my favorite subjects, an American Bald Eagle during an overcast day along the frozen Mississippi River. This particular bird is actually a juvenile, most likely in its second year based on various color patterns seen. Couple of things that stick out to me, the head and tail feathers - neither are completely white and the wings are not completely dark. Based on those three items, I would say the bird is a 3-4 year old but the key for me is the beak, at birth they are very dark and generally become completely yellow in the third year. This year the temperatures have been too warm and the eagles have not migrated far enough south yet but hopefully later this month or next I will get a few days once the temperatures have dropped below freezing for a few weeks. Camera Data: 800mm 1/1600 sec F8 ISO1600
