We are in spring meltdown mode as the temperatures warmup and any snow we had is turning into water very quickly. Winter in Central Illinois was not very snowy and I would rate as mild overall. We had some snow but generally it did not last very long once it fell. Our wonderful DOT teams made sure our roads were white with all the salt they dropped, does wonders for the vehicles. I have seen some predications that spring is going to bring big storms across the US but I honestly don’t know how the weather models can predict this, time will tell.
With the coming of spring, that means the majority of my work transitions from ice hockey to motorsports. The two major motorcycle series I normally capture images are starting up soon and that means lots of windshield time along with some flights to the west coast rounds. Hopefully nothing major occurs this year during my travel adventures as I bounce all over.
The first image this month in the icy Mississippi River just north of Burlington IA, from last weekend. The patterns are very interesting and the lines of broken ice are random, I was sitting there wondering exactly how this forms. How much does the wind impact the breaking of ice, compared to the sun and water currents below. There is no barge traffic this time of year, so it’s nature at work. Camera Data: 135mm 1/2500 sec F8 ISO400
Our second image is also from last weekend and the same location as our first image, a common subject of mine during the winter, an American Bald Eagle. This mature eagle happened to catch a small fish in the open water and was looking for a tree branch to sit on and enjoy it’s capture. I tend to let the eagles eat in peace, as I do not want to cause any stress by approaching them when they are eating or resting. Occasionally I am lucky to be in a location where an eagle will fly to a tree close to my location and I have the opportunity to capture images of them eating, resting or searching for their next meal. Bald eagles are interesting to observe their behaviors as they will attempt to steal food from other eagles and on this particular day the eagles also had competition from American White Pelicans. The pelicans probably outnumbered the eagles four to one, they were occasionally going after the same fish and normally would scare the eagle away. My guess is that the eagles find the pelican’s size intimidating and don’t want any trouble. Hard to imagine our national bird being scared away by a water bird but it’s something I have observed numerous times over the years. Camera Data: 560mm 1/1600 sec F5.6 ISO800
